別名「ドラムスティックの木」

東南アジアやインドなどで自生するモリンガを見ると、数ｍの高さになるモリンガの木に細長い棒のようなものが何本もぶら下がっていることがあります。それがモリンガの鞘(果実）です。

モリンガの鞘は細長い三角形の短剣のような形をしていて、長さは30～50cmほど。緑色のインゲンに似た鞘がぶら下がっている姿から、モリンガは「ドラムスティックの木」とも呼ばれます。

モリンガの木が成長して2、3年経つと鞘が実るようになります。若い鞘の中には白い種が20粒ほど並んでいます。さらに鞘が熟すと繊維質で固くなり、白い種は3枚の羽をもつ茶色い種になります。

モリンガの鞘は栄養豊富な野菜

東南アジアやインドなどモリンガが自生する地域では、モリンガの鞘は手軽に収穫できる身近な野菜として人気があります。

冬から春にかけてできる新鮮で若い状態の鞘を収穫します。
調理方法もインゲンに似ていて、一口大に切って炒めたり、塩茹でしたり、カレーやスープの具として入れたり、ピクルスにして食べたりします。

モリンガの鞘には栄養価が高く、食物繊維も豊富で、腸内環境を正常に整えたり、肝臓や腎臓、脾臓、関節痛に効果があるといわれています。
また殺菌作用があるので虫刺されや毒出しになり、毒蛇の毒消し薬として利用されています。
さらに家畜の肥料や飼料の原料として、モリンガの鞘を粉にしたものは台所用洗剤や壁磨きに使われています。

モリンガの鞘は野菜や毒消し、洗剤と、身近な場所で幅広く利用されているのですね。
